SF Jazz Fest tomorrow! 3-07-2009

by Jenny Scheinman on May 9, 2009

Hi all – i’m playing at the Yerba Buena center tomorrow, Sunday, March 8th as part of the San Francisco Jazz Festival.. gotta get up in a few hours and jump on a plane.. i’m sending this to family and friends as well as my old san francisco list so there may be some redundancies, sorry.. but i just realized that this is my first time leading a band in the bay area since i left in 1999! it’ll be an instrumental show, sorta the new york version of the band I used to play with at Bruno’s of the late nineties.. a wonderful group of players..

me – violin
Steve Cardenas – guitar
Rudy Royston – drums
Greg Cohen – bass

if you know the jazz world a bit you may know of Charlie Haden, Paul Motian, Carla Bley – Steve plays with all of them and has been a mainstay in my NY instrumental bands. Greg also would now qualify as an old friend. He adds his big memorable imaginative sound to many recordings across the genres – Tom Waits, Masada, Ornette Coleman to pick a few.. Rudy is the most recent friend and has the song and the groove all at the same time.. I think he was just out there with Bill Frisell..

all info and tickets here http://www.sfjazz.org/concerts/2009/spring/artists/scheinman.asp

and please say hello after the show ok?

all the best,

by Jenny Scheinman on May 9, 2009

Goodmorning dear all – Its four in the morning and I’m completely awake thanks to transatlantic mind scrambling. Hope to see you.

More on the two shows this week:
Tuesday February 10 at Barbes 7-9PM 76 9th St (corner of 6th Ave) Park Slope 718 965 9177 www.barbesbrooklyn.com
Jenny Scheinman (violin/vocals), Bruce Cockburn (guitar/vocals)
One of the records I listened to obsessively in college was Bruce Cockburn’s “Dancing In The Dragon’s Jaw”. I lost track of him for years and then recently ran into him backstage at Town Hall. As it turned out he had just been listening to my recent recordings – I think he’s one of the few people that has listened to every one.. When I got home I downloaded some of his recent music and it all came rushing back. He’s tremendous. One of the great voices, writers, melody makers, lyricists. He has released 26 recordings and has won almost every award one can win in music. My current favorite-song-ever is his “Beautiful Creatures”. We’ll do a mix of his music and mine (some new ones!), instrumental and vocal.

Tuesday February 17 at Barbes 7-9PM 76 9th St (corner of 6th Ave) Park Slope 718 965 9177 www.barbesbrooklyn.com
Jenny Scheinman (violin), Steve Cardenas (guitar), Greg Cohen (bass)
This is sort of a dress rehearsal for our San Francisco Jazz Festival performance in about a month’s time, though that one will also include my main man Rudy Royston on drums. To hear Greg Cohen in the tiny space of Barbes is always a treat – he’s got one of the greatest bass sounds on the planet. And Steve will keep us on our toes.

News and Upcoming:
-Jenny Scheinman will be taking off the month of March at Barbes because of an exclusivity agreement with The Blue Note. In her place will be the talented singer and fellow fiddler, Viola Boldt, who has unconfirmed plans for a duo collaboration with the mysterious cult guitar god Moe Hawk, and a debut of her band “The Other Robbie” featuring at least one of these Robbies: Robbie Gjersoe, Robbie Fulks, sometimes cousin Adam Robbie Guapo Levy, and or Sir Robert William Kimbrough. tonight, Rodney Crowell 1-13-2009

by Jenny Scheinman on May 9, 2009

Hello dear people, here goes..

Tonight, Jan 13 Singing Show at Barbes 7-9PM 376 9th St (corner of 6th Ave) Park Slope 718 965 9177 www.barbesbrooklyn.com
Jenny Scheinman (vocals/violin), Robbie Gjersoe (acoustic guitar/vocals), Adam Levy (electric guitar/vocals)
Guess what? Adam just got married – he tied the knot Friday.. It took us all by surprise! It was the shortest elopement in history! 5 blocks! we must toast together!.. One of the most blissful tours I had last year was with these two fellows playing with and opening for Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Adam Levy and I have been playing together since the beginning, he’s toured with Norah Jones, has a whole catalog of solo instrumental and vocal recordings, and coaxes pure magic from the strings of his electric guitar. Robbie was born with a slide on his finger and has toured and recorded with outlaw country artists Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely, The Flatlanders, The Greencards and Robbie Fulks. We’ll sing harmonies of the three-part variety and attempt to play our asses off..

Rodney Crowell Tour: This is the last leg of a Rodney Crowell tour that, with a few weeks off here and there, started last August in Nashville. We will be singing and playing songs from his grammy nominated album “Sex And Gasoline” as well as songs from the OED-length Rodney Crowell Songbook. If you are not familiar with Rodney, he grew up in east Texas, penned many of the great Emmylou Harris hits, was in her band for a long stretch several decades ago, produced many records and more children with ex-wife Rosanne Cash, is one of the great American songwriters. For the show in Philly and all of Europe we will be an acoustic trio – Rodney (words/guitar), Will Kimbrough (guitar, harmony vocals), me (fiddle, violin – he calls me the fiddlin’ violinist! – and harmony vocals). For Bay Shore, Chatham and NYC we will be joined by my main man (I DO feel like a gloating match maker!) Tim Luntzel on bass, and two special guests, Rosanne Cash and Minton Sparks. And for all shows except Lincoln Center Will and I will open with a set of our songs.

Hello all – I’ve returned from my adventures with Rodney Crowell and will be playing a few shows before the year’s end at my local haunts in New York City – three Tuesdays at Barbes and a show at Banjo Jim’s.

Tuesday December 2 at Barbes 7-9PM 76 9th St (corner of 6th Ave) Park Slope 718 965 9177 www.barbesbrooklyn.com
One of the records I listened to obsessively in college was Bruce Cockburn’s “Dancing In The Dragon’s Jaw”. I lost track of him for years and then recently ran into him backstage at Town Hall. Jenny Scheinman (violin), Steve Cardenas (guitar)
Steve was in my first New York band, is a tremendous improviser, has been a part of Paul Motian’s Electric Bebop band for years as well as Charlie Haden/Carla Bley’s Liberation Orchestra, Joey Baron’s band, and like I, has toured a bunch in the last several years with the great singer Madeleine Peyroux.

Wednesday December 10th at Banjo Jim’s, (9pm) 700 East 9th Street at Ave C, New York, NY 10009 212-777-0869 www.banjojims.com
Jenny Scheinman (vocals/violin), Robbie Gjersoe (acoustic guitar/vocals), Adam Levy (electric guitar/vocals)
I spent a few weeks this summer with these lads opening for and playing with the great West Texas singer Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Robbie is Jimmie’s long time guitar player, plays the hell out of bluegrass, and has a to-die-for can’t-buy-it feel. Adam is a delicacy. We grew up together playing steady out in SF in The Hot Club Of San Francisco, moved east around the same time and have stayed in close touch through all sorts of twists and turns of fate and fame. This is part of his weekly curated “Wish List” and will include sets by Bukka Allen and Bill Sims.
